What you want to do first is create an organized system to your social bookmarking campaigns. You do this by creating a “Bookmarks” folder within your Firefox toolbar.

Then, you will create a folder for every day of the week, so that you can easily submit your back-links to the top bookmarking websites regularly, without posting to the same site twice in any given day. (This is VERY important!).

You can create your bookmark folders from within your Firefox browser by clicking on “Bookmarks” and then selecting “Organize Bookmarks” >> “Create New Folder”.

You would think getting your website indexed by Google would be easy. Well, it can be, but sometimes it’s quite difficult.

There is the good old “Add Url” option where Google allows you to add your url to their database for crawling, which is fine. It usually means they will crawl your site once and add the home page url and maybe some of the deeper pages if you are lucky to their database which effectively means your site is indexed.

Here are the 10 golden rules for keyword research.

1. Keyword ideas – Use keyword tools such as Google Keyword Tool (free) Traffic Travis (free) Micro Niche Finder (recommended) KeywordDiscovery (recommended) to generate long tail keyword phrase ideas around a general subject. These tools will give you ideas based on terms that are actually searched for in search engines.

2. Relevancy – The search terms you choose MUST be totally relevant to your content. There is no use driving a ton of traffic to your site if when they get there your content is not what they are looking for. They will just leave and you won’t make the sale!

3. Search Volume – Use the same keyword tools (above) to find out what the monthly search volumes are for your potential chosen search terms. This will give you an idea of how many people (Globally or locally) search for that keyword or phrase per month. Remember, if no one searches for that phrase it will be no use being at the top of the search engines for it, you will get no traffic.

4. Competition – You MUST understand and analyze the competition. If you target a competitive keyword that has thousands or hundreds of thousands of searches per month, it is likely that the competition will be overwhelming. Again, the tools mentioned above, especially Micro Niche Finder (recommended) KeywordDiscovery (recommended) are helpful in analyzing the strength of the competition. The experienced niche marketer will choose long tail key phrases i.e. three or more words in the phrase. The search volume can still be reasonable for these terms but the competition is usually less therefore it is more achievable to get to the top of the search engines and grab that traffic to your site for a laser targeted search term. REMEMBER some websites have been targeting search terms for years and are light years ahead of new sites in terms of SEO strength.

5. Authority Sites – As mentioned above, understanding the competition is vital for choosing the right key phrases to target. If page one of Google is full of authority sites with page rank of 5 or more, it is very unlikely that you will be able to out rank them no matter how much work you put in. The only way you would reach No 1 in Google for a one word keyword such as “News” or “Shopping” or even “Weight Loss” is to have massive financial resources and a lot of time on your hands. It would take you years and years and you would have to gain the respect and authority of the internet community and the search engines to become the No 1 authority site for such a competitive search term. So, unless that is your plan….don’t even bother trying!

6. Niche Marketing – start small and specific, then work your way up. Remember, 90% of searchers don’t look beyond page 1 of the search engine results. It’s better to be on page 1 of a less popular search term than page 5 of a popular term, you will get more traffic. Let’s say your website sells Mobile Phones. You could start off by targeting a niche market keyword such as “cheap touchscreen mobile phones”, achieve a high ranking relatively easily, then try to rank for “touchscreen mobile phones” then when you are ready, eventually target just “Mobile Phones” but this may be a number of years down the line after building some decent page rank and link power for your site.

7. Multiple Keywords and phrases – Try not to target too many different key phrases in a single web page. I know its tempting, because there are so many possibilities that can be relevant. If you refer back to our “on-Page” SEO article you will see that your keyword should appear in the H1 tag, Title tag, the meta description, and the body of the content etc. You cannot stuff too many keywords into these areas without making your web page unreadable. A good tip is to target one long tail key phrase per page with a shorter key phrase or keyword within that phrase like our mobile phone example above. You can then target different key phrases on different web pages.

8. “Buying” Keywords and phrases – Try to target “buying” key phrases. What are buying key phrases? Basically most people want to drive traffic to their website so they can sell them something. So, try to use key phrases that people will use when they are ready to buy the product or service you are selling. For example, if you are selling physical products on an e-commerce store, you want to target search terms containing the product type or description linked with buying terms that matches your USP such as “cheap” or “quality” or “buy” or “discount” or even the “brand name”. Better still, the actual product name or model number (these people have already done their research). But remember to check the search volumes first. These searchers are looking to buy the product so they make the best traffic that is likely to convert. But note: don’t target “cheap” if your products are not cheap, your traffic will be disappointed and feel mislead. Also, test and monitor the conversion rate of your keywords, this will help to build a high converting website in the long run.

9. Indexing and off-page SEO – depending on the competitiveness of the keyword you target, your on-page SEO will deliver a natural search engine ranking position when your web page first gets indexed. This will give you an idea of how much “off-page” SEO work you will need to do. Hopefully, if you have done your research well, your starting position will be somewhere near the top 5 pages, you can then start your off-page campaign of link building, social bookmarking, article marketing etc to drive that ranking towards the No 1 spot.

10. Monitor and Review – Maintaining your search engine positions can sometimes be easy, sometimes difficult. Again, it depends on the competition and popularity of the niche. Keep checking your positions regularly to see if you need to work on them.

The reasoning behind using keyword focused page names is because some major search engines (Google, for example) seem to count not only your domain name, but individual page names as incoming anchor text, meaning that you are improving your page’s relevancy for certain keywords by using the keywords in the page name.

If descriptive page names don’t fit well with your website theme or template, than you should skip this step.  Never make changes to your website in the name of search engine optimization that will negatively affect your website usability by your visitors.  Ultimately, your website is designed for your website visitors, not search engines.

Proper page titles can increase search engine traffic

Probably the most important part of your website’s “on page” SEO is the page title.  Page titles alone can make or break your search engine rankings for certain keywords and phrases, and a proper page title can increase your clickthrough rate from the search engine results pages (SERPS) significantly.

Page titles should be unique for each individual page of your website, as, in theory anyway; each page of your website should have a specific purpose.  Keyword usage is a must, and your most important keywords should be at the beginning of the title.

It’s debated amongst prominent SEO companies whether using a few keywords or many keywords is better for the page title; and honestly, there seems to be evidence to support benefits in using either method.  However, page titles should be focused on the pages content; that is something that is agreed upon.

Regarding increased clickthroughs from the SERPS, it’s important that your page titles not only are keyword focused, but that the page title is an accurate descriptor about the pages contents as well.  Again, using our flowing example of “red striped ferrets”; which page title would be more compelling for a searcher to clickthrough to and checkout, if they were looking for information about red striped ferrets?

Title#1: “Red Striped Ferrets”

Title #2: “Red Striped Ferrets – Funny and Ferocious Creatures”

Of course, Title #2 would naturally perk more interest than Title #1, and the clickthrough rate from the SERPS would reflect that.

So – not only should the page title be keyword focused, but it should attempt to grab the attention of the target audience.

Meta Keywords Tag

Some believe the meta keywords tag is essentially obsolete for most major and minor search engines.  While many years ago you could stuff unrelated keywords into your meta keywords tag and significantly increase your search engine rankings; those days are long gone.  Should you still use the meta keywords tag?  Yes. Definitely?  While essentially putting your target keyword in the meta keywords tag won’t specifically improve your search engine rankings, it is the combination of instances of your keyword that is important i.e. Title, Page Name, Meta keyword Tag etc….

If using the keyword meta tag, be sure that you keep the keywords concise with the page’s content as it is suggested by some search engine optimizers that stuffing unrelated keywords into these tags may have a negative effect on your website.

Meta Description Tag

Te meta description tag does still seem to hold some weight in terms of search engine rankings.  You can notice that many search engines use the meta description of a page in their SERPS, so you need to ensure your keyword or key phrase appears in the meta description tag.  Also make sure the meta description tag is an accurate description of the pages contents. It also can be directly responsible for clickthrough rate as it is the description of your web-page that the searcher or potential visitor reads (along with the title) before they decide whether to click through to your site.

Revisit After Tag

The revisit after tag is not used by any major search engine; the only thing this tag will do for you is add excess code to your web pages.

Meta Robots Tag

The meta robots tag is useful if you want to exclude a certain page from search engine indexes (noindex), or if you don’t want to “endorse” certain external links found on an individual web page (nofollow).  However, if you want search engine robots to index your web page and to follow links, then you do not need to add the meta robots tag as search engine robots, by default, index pages and follow links unless explicitly told not to through the use of the robots meta tag or the robots.txt file.

Your website content

Your website content is probably the second most important factor in determining your search engine rankings for certain keywords and phrases, at least considering on page SEO factors.  Utilizing proper keyword targeting themes and using the right HTML elements can help increase your web pages relevancy for your target keyword phrases.

It is a good rule of thumb to ensure your exact keyword phrase appears at least once in the first 50 words of your page content and preferably at least 4 times in total.

Headings, The H1 Tag

The use of heading tags, <h1>, <h2>, <h3>, etc; is considered a very important part of your on page SEO.  Ideally, the headings should be keyword focused, but they should not repeat the page title verbatim.  Headings work great to break up a web page into different sections and thoughts, which is usually better for the website visitor as well.  Search engines still tend to put more weight on the text within the headings tags, thus the reason that keyword usage within these tags is recommended.

Keyword Proximity and Keyword Prominence

Often overlooked even by “professional” search engine copywriters, keyword prominence and proximity can help to increase your rankings for certain keywords and phrases in the SERPS.

Basically, you want to be sure that your important keywords are placed towards the beginning of your pages content, and you want your keyword phrases to be in close proximity to each other.  For instance, again with our example of the “red striped ferrets”, let’s say you are targeting the phrase “red striped ferret care”.  Not only would you want that phrase contained as close to the beginning of your content as you could feasibly allow, without sacrificing the readability of the content, you would want to ensure that you were able to include this phrase later on in the content as well.

For example, keyword proximity tells us that this phrase:

“If you find that your red striped ferret is chasing after your cat, take care that . . .”

Will not rank as well for the intended keywords as this:

“if you find that your cat is being chased by your red striped ferret, care should be taken. . . “

Taking these two things into consideration when creating your website content can really give you an advantage over your competitors in terms of ranking for certain keywords and phrases.

Keyword Density

Maintaining a certain keyword density is widely believed to be an important part of search engine optimization.  Unfortunately, many webmasters and even search engine copywriters put too much weight on the role of keyword density, and many of them analyze the keyword density of a body of content completely wrong.

Search engine are getting smarter, and their algorithms are able to weigh more factors into website’s ranking for certain keywords and phrases better than ever before.  Eventually it is entirely plausible that the keyword density of a webpage will be rendered of little effect in terms of helping improve rankings for a keyword phrase.  Even as of this writing there is no “magic” keyword density ratio that will effectively deliver increased rankings for a wide variety of websites, though a commonly suggested keyword density ratio is between 2%-5%, your own findings will vary.  And, as always, do not sacrifice the content’s “flow” to try and stuff more keywords into a body of text.  At the very least, it looks unprofessional and will turn off your website visitors.

Using related keywords (LSI Keywords)

Often overlooked, again, even by professional search engine copywriters, is the use of semantically related keywords within a body of text. What this means is that when you create content for your website that you should work to incorporate not only the target keywords and phrases, but also closely related terms as well. These terms are now widely referred to as LSI Keywords.

Some search engines use various forms of “word relationship” databases to help determine relevancy for keywords on a website or an individual web page.  Generally speaking of course, search engines have a database of words used on specific web pages, and when certain phrases are used in close relationship within the same body of text in several different locations, it gives search engines an idea that certain words and phrases are closely related.

For instance, let’s use an example of a webpage focusing on the term “search engine optimization”.  A webpage about search engine optimization would likely incorporate the terms “search engine optimization”, “search engine marketing”, “seo”, “sem”, “consultant”, “firm”, etc.  Because these terms are used frequently on web pages focused on the topic of search engine optimization, using these closely related keywords on your website would increase the likelihood of your website being ranked higher for your primary term, as well as increasing relevancy for your page on a wider variety of related terminology as well.

This is not to say that you should work to make a primary focus of 15 different keywords within a 500 word article, only that you should work to incorporate terms that are closely related to your primary and secondary keyword target, if you do use a secondary keyword target.

Descriptive links and their importance

The use of descriptive anchor text for your website’s internal links can help significantly with keyword targeting your individual web pages.  The reasoning behind this is simple, the links anchor text, even internal website links, will weigh as an internal link to the web page, building relevancy for the page linked to for the keywords used in the anchor text.

For example, if you have a web page about “red striped ferret mating habits”, you might use a link that looks like:

“Finding out about ferret mating habits can. . . “

This not only gives a solid descriptor to your website visitor of what the page is about, it can help increase that page’s relevancy for “ferret mating habits”.

It’s important to note, though, that just as it’s important to alternate the anchor text for incoming links to your website from 3^rd party websites, it’s important to alternate the text for links within your websites internal link structure as well.  Using the exact same keyword focused anchor text on multiple can be considered spam by some search engines, and that practice should be avoided.

Internal link structure – maintaining a proper flow

Lastly, you should maintain a proper internal linking “flow” for your website.  Ideally, your website should be intertwined to the point that every page has a one way, static link to every other page on your website.  For smaller websites, usually of 5 pages or less, this is not an issue.  However, maintaining a proper link structure is often seen as problematic for websites that have a significant amount of pages.

A proper internal link structure is important from not only a search engine optimization point of view, but from a user’s point of view as well.  For search engines, if you do not have a properly flowing internal link structure, you may suffer from a poorly indexed website; basically not allowing the search engines to easily find all of the pages of your website.  From a users standpoint, if you do not properly link to important pages of your website, they may miss out on key products or services that you have to offer, and if a visitor cannot easily find what they are looking for, they’ll simply leave your website unfulfilled.

If by chance you have a website that simply has too many pages to create a complete navigation menu on one page, then a static sitemap is a strong recommendation.

A sitemap will not only help search engine robots to find all of the pages of your website, but it will break up large websites in a way that will help users find what they are looking for more easily.  It’s also a good spot to utilize keyword focused anchor text. (hint, hint)

What Next?

While “on page” search engine optimization is an important step to helping you increase your rankings in search engines, it should be noted that no search engine optimization should ever take prominence over a visitor’s usability of your website. Simply put, this just means that you shouldn’t ever make a change to your website in the name of improving search engine optimization that will diminish the quality or usability of your website for your visitors.

Of course, proper search engine optimization requires not only these “on page” factors, but “off page” factors as well. In terms of competitive keyword markets, on page optimization methods will do little good alone, but with the proper off page methods i.e. Link Building put into place you will be worlds ahead of many other webmasters simply because they fail to acknowledge the importance of on page optimization methods.

In less competitive keyword markets, on page optimization alone could bring a significant increase in your website’s ability to rank for specific keywords and phrases.  One thing’s for certain, though: proper “on page” search engine optimization is a necessary step for today’s successful websites.  With this report you can literally save yourself hundreds or even thousands of pounds on professional SEO services, with the exact same results.
