Mobile SEO
“Over 15% of all Google searches took place on Mobile devices last year and this figure is growing all the time.â€
So how is Mobile SEO different to normal SEO? Well, it isn’t really as far as the search engines go. Mobile search results are not very different to the normal search results. The big difference between normal SEO and Mobile SEO is predominantly related to USER EXPERIENCE!
When someone finds your site via a mobile search, their experience is very different browsing your site on a mobile phone screen as opposed to a desktop or laptop screen. Websites are rendered differently on mobile phones, it is called ‘transcoding’. The web page is stripped of all unnecessary images, JavaScript and styles so that to make the page less heavy. You will also notice that the web page is often pulled out of shape, difficult to navigate, difficult to read and often made to look very unattractive compared to the normal view of the page.
Ultimately, if your website is not optimised for mobile devices it often provides a poor user experience and therefore will not appeal to a huge 15% of Goole searchers. There are two typical ways of optimising for mobile browsing:
- 1. To re-design your website with mobile in mind by removing flash, unnecessary Javascript and images, keeping the pages basic and not having too many columns and dynamic content.
- 2. Create a Mobile Friendly Version of your website on a subdomain (usually http://m.website.com) and add a mobile device detection redirect script to your main site.
Option 1 is a compromise and can detract from the desktop/laptop user experience
Option 2 is our preferred option. This way you get the best of both worlds. You can offer a website that suits the user’s device and therefore maximises their browsing experience. This setup means that if someone finds your website using a desktop or laptop they will see the normal version of your website. If they find it using a mobile device they will get redirected to your mobile website.
